3D Movies: The Hype, Impact and Price Effects
3D movies are the latest addition to the technology been used to create movies and while there has been endless hype about it, questions abound as to whether or not it has the capabilities of reversing trends such as piracy among other hardships that the movie industry has faced in the recent years. With 3D, the gist is to draw people back to the theater world and away from digital cinema, which seems to have taken root. Movies that are shot in 3D format use three varying approaches and it is precisely due to this reason that there has been endless hype about the movies.
The Implications of 3D
3D has completely changed the manner in which people view movies and it is for this reason that the implications spread beyond the entertainment aspect. This is attributed to the fact that it delivers the feeling of real action such that as a viewer, it becomes almost impossible to distinguish the scenes on screen from reality. This is attributed to the fact that the human vision becomes part of the action in the movie and as such, it becomes almost impossible to tell the difference. It makes it easy for them to become part of the events that are unfolding a million miles away and it is probably due to the immediacy of this aspect that 3D movies have become a fixture with a vast majority of people.
For a long time, people have opted to download movies and watch them at their own convenience but with all the hype and added advantages associated with 3D movies, it is highly estimated that the number of downloads will considerably go down as more people will opt to fill theater rooms and experience the beauty of the same, first hand.
Cost Implications
Apart from changing the manner in which people view movies, it is important to note that the movie tickets for 3D movies are considerably higher than other tickets. This in turn, has affected the industry immensely and largely, being viewed as a manner of exploiting people. In the past, a movie ticket would cost roughly around $ 4 but with 3D the prices have skyrocketed with some 3D movies such as the “The Clash of the Titans” and “ Alice in Wonderland” going for as much as $ 20. This 20% increase consequently saw the increase of 2D movies though at a slightly lower percentage.
It is important to note that though this is the case, this increase in price will have greater implications in the future that were relegated to the backseat. For starters, though 3D has caught people by storm, there are several 3D movies coming out and while some of them are up to mark and deliver the required experience, others fall short on delivering the same. It is largely for this reason that these same people flocking theaters for 3D movies will shy away from having to part with large sums of money for substandard shows. What is more, it is important to note that due to the price hikes, a vast majority of people are still turning to downloading the movies.
Greatest Hits
Among the most hyped movies in 3D format is Avatar, which was developed by James Cameron. Having worked on it from 1994, it was released in 2009. It is due to the duration that he took to complete the movie that it achieved the capability to stir things up in a profound way. In essence, the 3D effects incorporated into the movie are groundbreaking and so far unmatched. All aspects required to ensure that this is effected ideally are thought of in this movie. For instance, it is important to note that though the live action element was used in shooting this movie, 60% was done using photorealism images and as such, was able to pull off the 3D vision perfectly. With this movie, the viewer feels like they are part of the Pandoran jungles and this makes it even more real. Other movies that have employed this same aspect include; Monsters vs. Aliens, My Bloody Valentine and superman returns among others.
Though currently, 3D is still a new phenomenon and one that is stirring a lot of interest, only time will tell if it has the capability to hold people's attention and retain the high ticket prices. This is especially true if it were to become into television technology.
